'We must not mislead people, create the notion that renewable energy is cheap'

On Monday, the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) and non-profit organisationTransform RSA successfully obtained an urgent court interdict to block Eskom from signing 27 renewable energy contracts, in its efforts to prevent the closure of power plants.

The High Court in Pretoria ordered the energy minister to give an undertaking not to sign agreements with the independent power producers until a full hearing in court.

Stephen Grootes spoke to the president of transform RSA Adil Nchabeleng and Terrence Govender of the South African Renewable Energy Council, to find out more.

I think we must not mislead people and create the notion that renewable energy is cheap. It is not cheap. Eskom has to cross-subsidise the cost that it loses in terms of purchasing from IPPs and that cost has to be passed on to the workers and the consumers bear the entire risk.

Right now the IPPs are not at the cost where we are looking at it and it is not even comparable to coal which we have in abundance.

Currently energy costs in South Africa are exorbitant. We want the poor to have access to proper energy, as well as guaranteed energy at a cost-effective rate. And not only that, the workers must be able to afford the power in the country.

Nchabeleng has denied that his organisation is a front for the Gupta family.

I have no knowledge of the Guptas. I have never met the Guptas personally and from time to time whenever people want to dismiss whatever we have to say in terms of its content reliability, we will always be brushed off as Guptas.
