White South African farmers face 'horrific circumstances': Australian MP

Government urgently needs to clarify its position on land expropriation without compensation.

That from one of the country's leading land reform experts.

Professor Ben Cousins has made the comments in light of a proposed move by an Australian MP to fast-track the visas of white farmers seeking to leave South Africa.

Immigration minister Peter Dutton says he is considering the move because of the 'horrific circumstances' he says white farmers are facing.

I think [his comments] represent a misunderstanding of the South African situation and he's not the only one. Many South Africans, many white farmers and many white people are entering into a panic around imminent expropriation without compensation, without any real basis.

Prof. Ben Cousins, Director of Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (Plaas), UWC

We're not talking about the nationalisation of land, although the EFF is, I don't think the ANC is, we're talking about new attention to land reform.

Prof. Ben Cousins, Director of Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (Plaas), UWC

I don't think white farmers need to be applying for visas to Australia. I think, in fact, white farmers should be saying, 'what can we do to help land reform become effective and sustainable.

Prof. Ben Cousins, Director of Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (Plaas), UWC

Dutton's comments have been slammed by the South African government, which says land redistribution will only happen within the law.
