Medication ATMs launch in Alex ahead of nationwide roll-out

South Africa's first ATM pharmacy was launched on Thursday in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg.

Managing director of Right ePharmacy, Fanie Hendricks said the design of the Pharmacy Dispensing Unit (PDU) is to overcome patient's challenges in the public health sector. He said all the PDU services are free and only stock chronic medication.

If you're a chronic patient and you normally go to the clinic on a monthly basis to collect your medication, this technology was designed to overcome the patient challenges surrounding that. You get referred by your health care specialist at the clinic to a Pharmacy Dispensing Unit (PDU) facility that is convenient for you. As you come to the site you will be registered, get a patient ID card and then you can go get your medication.

Hendricks said they are about to roll-out more PDU sites across the country with two underway in Soweto and then Diepsloot.
