Principal accused of using school funds to pay for holiday

It's a case of _don't _pay back the money for a Cape Town school principal accused of embezzling school funds.

The former head of the primary school in Pinelands allegedly used the money, nearly R350 000, to pay for a holiday and a golf membership.

Mervyn Counsell has been allowed to go on early retirement without the funds being deducted from his pension.

We asked a couple of questions and we weren't given the correct answers and we were told we were questioning his integrity.

Gary Oliver, Chairperson for the Pinelands Primary School's Governing Body

Speaking to Kieno Kammies, outgoing Chairperson for the Pinelands Primary School's Governing Body, Gary Oliver, says an investigation into the claims is still under way.

To date, no charges have been laid against Counsell.

Nothing along those lines [fraud charges] has been actioned so far.

The principal wanted to be the super chairperson of the governing body, he wanted to control funds, I had no access to even looking at the school bank account. That information was withheld from us.

Counsell's also accused of using the school credit card for personal expenses and paying loans for staff and himself from school funds.
