Minister Angie Mothsekga has been ordered to come up with an emergency plan to address issues of sanitation at schools.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his dismay at the death of 5-year-old Viwe Jali after she fell into a pit toilet a school in the Eastern Cape.

Jali went missing on Tuesday before her body was found the following day.

This is not the first incident as a civil case brought by the family of 5-year-old Michael Komape, who fell into a pit toilet at Mahlodumela Primary School in Limpopo in 2014, continues.

Komape's death raised great concern and spurred calls to eradicate pit toilets at schools.

Rampahosa has called on Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga to come up with an emergency plan to address challenges around unsafe ablution facilities at schools.

Eyewitness News reporter Lauren Isaacs has more on the story.

He has given Angie Motshekga a month to deliver an audit and three months to roll out proper infrastructure. So basically within 3 months, the President does not want to see any pit toilets in our schools.

Lauren Isaacs, EWN reporter

Section 27 earlier mentioning Michael's name has become synonymous with the struggle for children around the country for sanitation and safety at schools. They are saying the minister must be held accountable for 5-year-old Viwe Jali's undignified and tragic death.

Lauren Isaacs, EWN reporter

Equal Education said there are 1 585 schools in the Eastern Cape that have only pit toilets.
