Transport ministry to tighten law enforcement on SA's roads over Easter

Transport Minister Blade Nzimande launched the Easter Road Safety Campaign on Tuesday ahead of the forthcoming holidays.

Deputy Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga says officials have taken into account that the Easter holidays will occur at the end of the month.

Chikunga says this typically results in increased spending and travel among the population.

We are aware that it will be a rainy weekend meaning that our roads will be slippery.

We are expecting high traffic volume on Thursday because most businesses will be closing therefore people will be travelling in the afternoon.

People will be travelling to church conferences, to Moria... We are expecting over 500 buses from Gauteng alone that will be travelling to Moria.

Chikunga says the high death toll during this period is attributed to the fact that people abuse alcohol and get into vehicles and drive. She says some motorists don't adhere to the road laws, and exceed the speed limit.

Most of the roads that we have identified as hazardous roads are not bad roads therefore the problem is not with the roads but with the driver, passengers and pedestrians.

She says, during this Easter period, they will be heightening and strengthening law enforcement on the roads as well as awareness campaigns.
