Pressure group Outa says overtaxed residents can't afford an additional fuel levy. It intends to object to the proposed plan.

Western Cape road users may be forced to pay an additional fuel levy on top of the existing national fuel levy, if provincial government goes ahead.

It's reported that Western Cape finance MEC has consultants investigating the feasibility of a provincial fuel levy.

Pressure group, the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) says it will object to the proposal and conduct more research in order to formulate its arguments.

Outa's Wayne Duvenhage says overtaxed residents cannot afford an additional fuel levy.

Duvenhage argues that introducing provincial fuel levies could cause complications, if they are not applied uniformly.

He explains that this is an attempt to resurrect a proposal made in 2005, which was shelved by provincial government at the time.

He says the national fuel levy already brings in about R75 billion a year for all three spheres of government.

If there's any intention to introduce a regional fuel levy, we will make sure that the public are on board with an objection to this.

Wayne Duvenhage, Outa chairperson

We will object and oppose this vociferously if it comes about.

Wayne Duvenhage, Outa chairperson

To introduce a regional fuel levy has a number of complications. It's being applied to a society that is already overtaxed.

Wayne Duvenhage, Outa chairperson

The financial and economic situation of this country is very different to what it was then. So it [the proposal] has to go through a formal process of engagement.

Wayne Duvenhage, Outa chairperson

Take a listen to Outa explain its position on the matter:
