Training of airport security under investigation

The South African Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) says it is investigating claims of inadequate security training at an accredited facility in Gauteng.

This comes after concerns about a lapse in training of personnel tasked with X-ray screening of passengers and baggage.

EWN has seen complaints about sub-standard training of security officials tasked with screening people and baggage for weapons and explosives.

It's alleged that Reshebile Aviation and Security Services sent its staff for a week-long training at Ntate Aviation and Security Training but there was no instructor.

Reshebile Aviation and Security Services provides security personnel to airports such as OR Tambo International, reports EWN's Barry Bateman.

The trainees apparently only watched a few videos and read theory from a book.

This relates to a company called Ntate Aviation and Security Training in Gauteng.

The airport screeners are the people who put bags and people through machines and watch the screen for explosives or weapons.

There was no facilitators and there were no actual demonstrations. This apparently fell way short of what is acceptable.
