8 interesting facts about the Two Oceans Marathon and how it's evolved

One of Cape Town's most iconic race events will take place this weekend.

The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon will go down on Saturday 31 March 2018, starting at 06:30.

General Manager at Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, Carol Vosloo, says the race event has gone off the municipal water grid.

She explains that all the race water for the event has been collected from the Newlands Spring, as the city grapples with a water crisis.

Vosloo spoke about the marathon, its history and other beautiful stories.

  • The first Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon was held in 1970 and saw only 26 runners line up
  • The oldest competitor this year, Brian Key, is 79 years old and it will be his 16th time participating
  • Another runner, Shaun Meiklejohn, will complete his 20th race and holds the most Comrades gold medals ever
  • The race will see over 3 000 international visitors taking part in the Half and Ultra marathon
  • It's been dubbed the world's most beautiful marathon
  • Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon will partner with the Wildlands Conservation Trust, the Igazi Foundation, Chaeli Campaign and Waves For Change
  • The race has moved towards exclusivity, open to many participants will visual impairments and and physical disabilities
  • Starting the race off with a mighty cannon blast has become a race tradition
