'She took both my hands and kissed me on the cheek': actor on 'kind' Winnie

A local actor who appeared in the biopic 'Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom' has remembered with fondness his meeting with the late Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

Multi-award winner Deon Lotz played the role of Kobie Cotzee in the 2013 feature, and shared with Late Nights host Sara-Jayne King the moment he met the struggle stalwart.

She came to me and said 'you did a beautiful job, well done.'

Just her kind words to me, as a white male in South Africa. She could have chosen not to speak to me, because I was playing a part of a former National Party minister, but she didn't. She came to me, took, both my hands and kissed my on the cheek and said 'well done, you did a great job'.

Lotz says much of the criticism that has been leveled at Madikizela-Mandela is misplaced.

Growing up in South Africa you hear about the negative side of Winnie, but I can assure you that if I had to go through what she went through, I would have reacted the same way, if not worse.

The film is based on the 1995 autobiographical book Long Walk To Freedom by former president Nelson Mandela. The role of Winnie was portrayed by British actress, Naomie Harris.

She did a very good job...obviously she had met her and done research on her.
