'She fought patriarchy and white supremacy while they tried to break her down'
The legacy of Winnie Mandela must not simply be as the controversial ex-wife of former President Nelson Mandela.
That's according to academic and transformation expert Asansa Ngoasheng.
Speaking to Late Nights host Sara-Jayne King, she says Winnie is often judged more harshly for her personal transgressions than her former husband is.
We never talk about Mandela's infidelity, but we will harp on about show she [Winnie] betrayed her man.
Asanda Ngoasheng, academic and transformation expert
Ngoasheng says Mama Winnie must be viewed as more than 'the ex-wife' and as a political warrior in her own right.
She practically ran the ANC when everybody was in jail and in exile, but we don't give her the credit for that.
Asanda Ngoasheng, academic and transformation expert
Ngoasheng says South African's owe a debt of gratitude to the struggle stalwart, but that the fight for equality is still not over.
We need to remember that we still live in a patriarchal, white supremacist, society and that what Winnie Mandela died for is still going on.
Asanda Ngoasheng, academic and transformation expert
