The Mandela family spokesperson says the death of Winnie Madikizela-Mandela came as a shock as they thought she'd be home soon.

Mandela family spokesperson, Victor Dlamini reflected on the life of struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

Dlamini has been speaking on behalf of the family for a number of years and has been very close to Mam' Winnie.

He is currently in New York and says the news of her passing came as a shock. Madikizela-Mandela has been in and out of hospital since last year and according to Dlamini, they thought she would be out soon, just like the times before. But this time she succumbed to her illness.

I dont think any of us were expecting that, it was such a shock. She fought so many worthy opponents and we thought she could cheat death indefinitely.

Victor Dlamini, Mandela family spokesperson

We are beginning to lose those stalwarts, who for many of us signifies courage and bravery, whom we also cherish because they helped us make sense of the world that was brutal.

Victor Dlamini, Mandela family spokesperson

I suppose the real challenge for us is what have we learned from them, how can we carry on the fight that they so violently waged against equality and discrimination.

Victor Dlamini, Mandela family spokesperson

Sometimes it is OK to say we have lost someone we loved and cherished because there will be no one like Winnie Madikizela-Mandela again.

Victor Dlamini, Mandela family spokesperson

Dlamini says Madikizela-Mandela was one of the few leaders who did not abandon her roots. She lived in Orlando-West and never moved to the suburbs. In that way her connection with the community was deep rooted, says Dlamini.
