'The party came out more united than ever'

The Democratic Alliance held its Federal Congress over the weekend where it adopted different policies and amendments.

Politicians and analysts on The Eusebius McKaiser Show, including DA federal chairperson, Athol Trollip, politics Researcher. Ph.D. student, Alexandra Leisegang and Political Analyst, Lukhona Mnguni unpacked the congress.

Trollip said he thought they had an extraordinary weekend and there was a lot of hype in the build-up to the congress. There was undoubtedly going to be some tension around the diversity debate and the duration of the leadership tenure, and there was a lot of speculation that the DA was factionalised, he added.

We had an extraordinary congress that was beautifully arranged and everyone had a lot of fun and I think the party came out of that congress more united than ever.

Trollip said the party had some strong debates on a number of issues. The federal congress started on the Friday and went well into the night. He said there were two fantastic days of the congress where leadership was endorsed and elected without being contested.

Leisegang said the DA has reaffirmed its liberal values this weekend but seems to be scared of calling themselves social liberals.

I think that the key point for the DA is to just embrace it and say right, we believe in social liberalism which does require some sort of safety net for individuals who are unemployed or who cannot seek employment and I think that is where the DA has been headed for a couple of years now.

Alexandra Leisegang, politics Researcher and phd student

Mnguni said he was not convinced by how the diversity clause played out, as he thinks the DA is still trying to play political football.

The core question is whether or not we expect the DA to depart fundamentally from its founding values to accommodate the South African realities.

Lukhona Mnguni, Political Analyst
