Cape school teacher shot dead in front of pupils

Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schäfer's spokesperson, Jessica Shelver has confirmed that on Wednesday, a teacher at Middelpos Primary School in Saldanha Bay was shot dead by her ex-husband who later turned the gun on himself. They both died.

She says the incident happened in full view of the primary school children.

After hearing about the incident, the circuit manager immediately fetched the victim's two children from Vredenburg High School to provide support.

We have to caution against speculations because we have to protect two very young children that have lost both their parents in the most tragic way.

We will provide counseling and support for these young children and teachers will also be receiving employee wellness support. Teachers and children are equally traumatised about this incident.

Member of the SA Gun owners association, Jonathan Deal says he doesn't think that guns, whether legal or illegal, are the reason people get killed. He says if a person's intent is to kill, they will do it with or without a gun. They will find other alternative means to accomplish their mission, he says.

Deal says South Africa is one of the leading countries in gun control legislation. Before acquiring a gun, South Africans go through an extensive vetting process which includes interviewing their friends and family as well as background checks, he adds.

It takes about 8 to 9 months for one to acquire a firearm in South Africa, says Deal.
