'Arthur Fraser is running out of rope to protect himself'

The Inspector-General of Intelligence, Dr Setlhomamaru Dintwe, has accused State Security Agency director-general Arthur Fraser of interfering with his office and undermining investigations against him.

Dr Dintwe has been investigating the State Security Agency but appears to have been hamstrung due to Fraser's intimidation and interference.

In a book written by investigative journalist and author Jacques Pauw, Fraser allegedly set up a parallel intelligence structure when he was the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency nearly 10 years ago, and used public funds to do so.

Right2Know campaign researcher and organiser Murraey Hunter says it's high time this matter is dealt with because 'it's been happening in the shadows for too long'.

This didn't start in the Zuma administration, but it was a big feature of the Zuma era - of certain political deployees going to State Security structures and taking control of the institution and using those resources for all kinds of bad consequences... and Arthur Fraser's name comes up in all of this.

Murray Hunter, Right2Know Campaign researcher and organiser

There is a massive need for a clean-up operation, he adds.

Fraser is evidently running out of rope to protect himself from these investigations.

There are serious concerns about the lack of accountability in the activities of the State Security Agency, he says..

Obviously we can argue that there's a need of a degree of secrecy but we've seen there's been total secrecy. We have seen, even those existing provisions for some kind of transparency through the Inspector General, those basic measures haven't been met up until now.

Murray Hunter, Right2Know Campaign researcher and organiser

He says it is encouraging to see the Inspector General taking a different approach in trying to make the SSA more accountable and transparent.

R2K would like to see proper reform taking place in Parliament to make sure that the office of the Inspector General is given more resources, independence, and transparency, ensuring that history doesn't repeat itself.
