Why cheating could be good for your relationship

While there are risks involved in cheating on your partner, clinical sexologist and couples sex therapist Dr Eve says infidelity can enrich your relationship.

If your relationship feels too dull and too familiar - leading to a lack of passion and purpose - she says one should rather be open and honest about their desire to have consensual sex outside of the partnership.

Speaking on the benefits, Dr Eve says it may help you stay in the relationship.

Women specifically, who were getting online [cybersex] will say I am feeling so much better about myself, I am feeling hornier, I am much more sexual with my partner, I am more tolerant of him or her so why must I stop it? I am having a personal growth experience and it is benefiting my relationship.

Let's just be real. Why do we have that moral high ground now around judging other people?

Dr Eve, Clinical sexologist and couples sex therapist

Caller, Lihle says he has had to think of someone else while having sex with his girlfriend and while he does feel guilty, he says this has stopped him from cheating.

I have been with my girlfriend now for three to four years. I used to cheat, but since I stopped I have had a problem when we are having sex. I have had to close my eyes and imagine someone else. I think the benefit is me being with her, me not cheating in the traditional sense.

Sihle, caller

Dr Eve says this is a red flag.

The problem that I am curious about is why you are staying with your girlfriend because it sounds like you are not sexually attracted to her. This is not a health relationship if you have had to fantasize. It's like if you have had to medicate yourself in order to stay in a relationship.
