Vavi: 'We are mobilising hard' for nationwide strike over minimum wage

The SA Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi says they are mobilising to march against the minimum wage.

The union is planning protest action against the minimum wage and they say government should introduce fair labour practices.

We are already mobilising hard in the streets.

We are excited that the workers identify with what we saying - that we cannot agree with workers freedom and democracy being translated to mean poverty wages that workers be strapped into the apartheid wage structure.

Vavi says they will be engaging with Parliament about their grievances regarding the minimum wage.

We are going to plead with our Members of Parliament to say please, Radical Economic Transformation doesn't mean R11 an hour to Extended Public Works workers or R20 an hour to the rest of the workers.

Vavi says the current minimum wage doesn't compute with the study conducted by the University of Cape Town.

At least if every worker were to earn above the minimum living level, which has been calculated already by the University of Cape Town in 2014, which says a family of five must have R5 400 just to keep their heads above the water.
