Concerns over rape used as a weapon of war in places like Syria

Concerns have been raised over the rape of women in places like the Central African Republic, Turkey, and Syria, where the criminal act is used as a weapon of war.

International journalist Yvonne Ridley recently interviewed imprisoned Syrian women who suffered rape on what she says is 'an industrial scale'.

She says since interviewing the women, there are still thought to be around 7 000 women in Syria who are exposed to the abuse on an hourly basis.

In my forty years of journalism, I just haven't encountered such brutality. It has been absolutely horrendous.

Yvonne Ridley,International journalist

The UN is very good at gesture politics and getting angry, but to be brutally frank they're doing nothing, and neither is the international community. The UN has proved to be a toothless animal without a backbone.
