Correctional Services chuffed by drop in prison breaks to ‘only’ 50 a year

Whilst we regret this incident – and it’s totally unacceptable, because we want to ensure safe and secure custody – it’s also important to say that the number of escapes from South African correctional centres moved from 1244 per annum in 1995 to 50 per annum at the end of March 2017.

Logan Maistry, Correctional Services

On Monday, 16 prisoners managed to break through the iron bars on the windows of their cells - and through the fence of the “Sun City” correctional facility in Johannesburg.

Two of the 16 has since been found in KZN, and shot dead by police officers who tried to apprehend them.

Ray White interviewed Correctional Services spokesperson Logan Maistry.

Maistry expressed regret for the incident, but stressed that South African prisons are more secure than at any time since 1995.

For more detail; listen to the interview in the audio below (and/or scroll down for more quotes from it.

We have over 160 000 inmates currently in South Africa… We have 243 correctional facilities…

Logan Maistry, Correctional Services

99.97% of the inmate population in South Africa were detained safe and securely [in the year to the end of March].

Logan Maistry, Correctional Services

We’ve never had an escape from the facility in Kokstad… [However] Our major centres are a challenge for us…

Logan Maistry, Correctional Services
