We exposed StratCom in the 80s - Max Du Preez

Journalist Max du Preez says he is shocked at allegations that he formed part of smear campaign against the late struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

He is among a supposed list of journalists who have been accused of writing false reports about the stalwart under an operative called StratCom (Strategic Communications) during the apartheid era.

Madikizela-Mandela named the journalists in a video clip published on HuffPost SA.

The video has now been removed.

Du Preez says he is shocked of the lack of knowledge over the matter and that he is one of the journalists who exposed StratCom.

We exposed StratCom in the 80s, the Weekly Mail/ Mail and Guardian.. we nailed them. I outed John Horrock who was one of the main operators of StratCom. In fact, there was a two day hearing at the Truth Commission on StratCom and journalists - where a lot of journalists, among them spies, gave evidence.

It is a bit of a shock that people have such short memories or that they are prepared to make such strong statements without any background.

Everybody is now on the list. That is just reckless. I hope that there will be some credible source coming with this list and we should publish it. We as journalists, if we have a whiff of any of our colleagues working for the state or doing anything else other than journalism we should investigate and out them.
