Outcry over Cape Town City FC's lease of Observatory Stadium

Residents of Observatory say they're concerned by proposals to build a 10 000-seater football stadium in the area.

Members of the Observatory Civic Association say there was no public consultation over the plans, which would see the stadium become the official home of Cape Town City Football Club.

The group's chair Tauriq Jenkins says the areas has been known to the community as a multi-purpose centre for over 50 years.

There are also concerns about increased traffic congestion, the impact on the environment and noise and light pollution.

Th fact that the City is leasing the facility R8 500 per month is also a worrying factor, says Jenkins.

There's been a complete lack of consultation as far as the process is concerned. We were not formerly informed about the leasing arrangements.

Mayco Member for Assets and Facilities Management, Stuart Diamond says the Observatory Civic Association chose not to partake in any of the processes which they are now complaining about.

Diamond also justified how the City arrived at R8 500 per month for leasing the facility.

The value of R8 500 is not the only contribution they are making, they would have to pay for water should they use water, they have to pay electricity and they have to pay rates as well.

According to Diamond, Cape Town City FC will also have to upgrade the facility to accommodate other activities from their own budget.
