Motoring: Tips on how to park a vehicle fitted with a torque converter gearbox

Do you need to apply the handbrake when parking a vehicle which is fitted with a torque converter gearbox with a park function?

Azania Mosaka speaks to Technical Editor at CAR Magazine Nicol Louw to find out.

The park function itself is linked to what they call a parking pawl. That is a mechanical lever in the gearbox, that when you actually come to a standstill and select the park function, this lever engages with a ring gear on output shaft on the torque converter actually locking it in place so it cannot turn.

It is good practice when you park an automatic vehicle on an incline, to first use the handbrake, secure the vehicle with a handbrake and then select the parking function.
