Europe's WhatsApp age restriction will be tricky to enforce, says tech expert

European users will have to confirm their age when they are prompted to agree new terms of service.

Popular messaging service WhatsApp is raising its minimum age from 13 to 16 in Europe.

This move is an effort to comply with new data privacy rules coming into force in May, explains tech expert Jan Vermeulen.

European users will have to confirm their age when they are prompted to agree new terms of service.

Vermeulen says without an enforcement guideline, people under 16 will still have access to WhatsApp.

This is because of new privacy legislation coming into force in May in Europe.
