Strike at Charlotte Maxeke hospital postponed, services back running

Nehawu Gauteng deputy-secretary Gracia Rikhotso has told 702 that one of union's main grievances with the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital is the non-payment of staff overtime.

Rikhotso says the management is also not taking seriously issues raised during bilateral meetings.

The union had threatened to shut down the hospital in protests on Wednesday but have put those plans on the back burner, for now.

Our basic grievance is the non-payment of overtime which workers had worked for and it is also pertaining to long outstanding non-payment of the PMDS, but most importantly it's about non-filling of critical posts.

Referring to incidents of vandalism last week Rikhotso says union were not involved.

Our workers were not on strike, we were on lunchtime demonstrations which was overtaken by criminal activities who took advantage of the situation.

The hospital's spokesperson Lungiswa Mvumvu says services are running smoothly at the hospital.

We have been having discussions with Nehawu representatives from the region and the province. When they started, in fact the leadership said they are excusing themselves from everything that is happening as they have been speaking to their members to inform them about the developments in the department as well as the hospital.

However, Democratic Alliance Shadow MEC on Health in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature Jack Bloom says what happend last week isnot acceptable. He says workers and management must have peaceful negotiations.
