Makhosi Khoza: my new portfolio at Outa was a natural choice

Dr Makhosi Khoza has joined pressure group Outa to head up its local government programme. Listen to her plans for the new role.

Former ANC MP Dr Makhosi Khoza has joined the Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) as an executive director to head the organisation’s new local government programme.

In 2017, Khoza made headlines as an ANC MP who publicly criticised former president Jacob Zuma, calling for him to step down.

Khoza left the ANC last year to form the African Democratic Change (ADeC), but last month announced her retirement from politics.

Khoza says that Outa's new local government portfolio was a natural fit for her.

She says she has always been passionate about local government and service delivery.

She previously served as the chairperson of Parliament's public service and administration portfolio committee before the ANC fired her from the job.

Outa arose as a lobby group in response to e-tolling, but has since taken on a range of issues to fight corruption and maladministration.

Khoza has condemned assertions that anti-corruption groups such as Outa are "anti-black."

She adds that she does not want to perpetuate an adversarial relationship with government, but will take leadership to court if need be.

Khoza says her first priority is to education citizens about their municipal rights and service delivery rights.

I strongly feel that local government is one of the most neglected spheres of government in South Africa.

Dr Makhosi Khoza, Head of Outa's local government programme

Local government is where the real pain of corruption is felt. When services are compromised, it's the local people that suffer.

Dr Makhosi Khoza, Head of Outa's local government programme

As the committee chair, I was exposing the collapsing hospitals in Mpumalanga province, for example.

Dr Makhosi Khoza, Head of Outa's local government programme

This suggestion that organisations against corruption are anti-black is more insulting to people like myself.

Dr Makhosi Khoza, Head of Outa's local government programme

We are black, but we are anti-corruption.

Dr Makhosi Khoza, Head of Outa's local government programme

Why should an organisation doing good be labelled and painted in colour?

Dr Makhosi Khoza, Head of Outa's local government programme

Sometimes you need an independent watchdog, and as citizens we need to take charge of our government.

Dr Makhosi Khoza, Head of Outa's local government programme

Take a listen to Makhosi Khoza share her vision for her new role and SA:
