#MatterofFact: Africa Check debunks tweet about SA’s education system

A dire picture has been painted about South Africa's education system in a tweet shared 763 times and liked by 1,479 people, by @Sowellnomics.

The account claims “South Africa has the 3rd worst education system in the world, 50% of students drop out of the system, while only 30% get the marks requires [sic] to get into Uni,”

Kate Wilkinson joined Azania Mosaka to clarify the alleged stat.

We got in touch with him/her and they responded, and to support the first claim, we were sent a link to an article from 2016 and in that article, it reported on the World Economic Forum's Global Information Technology report. There are a number of problems with this report.

Kate Wilkinson, senior researcher at Africa Check

The claim that South Africa has the 3rd worst education system in the world is incorrect. We can look at much more respected measures and one of them is a study which is called the Southern and Eastern Africa Consortium for Monitoring Educational Quality. The latest data we have is a little bit old, it's from 2007. In that study, they tested over 61 00 Gr 6 pupils in over 2 700 schools in 15 countries across Africa,

When we look at that data we see that when it comes to math we are ranked 8th out of the 15 countries and when it comes to reading we are placed 10th so there are serious problems but claims like this don't give us the real picture.
