James Selfe: The DA accepts the court's decision on De Lille in its entirety

Patricia de Lille will remain the mayor of Cape Town and a Democratic Alliance (DA) member awaiting a decision on a court process challenging a clause in the party’s constitution.

This was the ruling made by Judge Patrick Gamble on Tuesday.

Eusebius McKaiser spoke to the DA Federal Council Chairperson James Selfe to get clarity on whether the DA will respect the interim Mayoral powers of De Lille.

Selfe said they accept the court's decision in its entirety.

We accept the implications that flow from that as well.

When asked if he was disappointed with reports of DA councilors who suggested that the mayor's job would be effectively reduced to playing a ceremonial role, Selfe answered:

That process has been going on for some time, because what had happened previously is an unhealthy concentration of power in the office of the mayor to such an extent that a number of other statutory bodies within the council such as sub councils and section 79 councils were effectively striped of their powers and their powers were centralised.

He continued and said there has been a move over the last couple of months to restore the balance and to make sure that those institutions can do their job.

And to ensure that the mayor when she exercises her powers does so in consultation with her colleagues which is the way it should be in a democratic organisation.

Selfe added that even though they agreed with Natasha Mazzonne's statements that were released after the judgement, her statements were sort of a knee-jerk reaction rather than a more studied response.

In her statements following the courts decission, Mazzonne said:

The Judgment of the Western Cape High Court is not in the best interests of the people of Cape Town.

Natasha Mazzone, DA

Selfe responded that by reinstating De Lille as the mayor, the judgement of the court is an unfortunate consequence.

In an attempt to restore stability in the City of Cape Town, they went - in our view - beyond what is normally allowed in an interim release.
