Mchunu steps in amid brewing tensions over foreign spaza shops in KZN

Tensions are simmering in parts of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) where foreign shop owners have been threatened with violence.

Foreign shop owners were instructed by locals to close their businesses by Thursday or face attacks.

A local business association sent a letter accusing foreign nationals of operating illegally.

KZN Premier Willies Mchunu met with business owners in KwaMashu township on Tuesday in an effort to avoid violence.

The meeting was also attended by economic development MEC Sihle Zikalala and eThekwini deputy mayor Fawzia Peer.

The Premier's spokesperson, Thami Ngidi, says officials have asked for time to implement regulations.

Mchunu wants to implement regulatory measures in order to ensure fair competition.

Ngidi says the premier's office is confident that violence will be avoided this week.

This thing has been brewing for quite sometime.
