Trevor Manuel: 'Presidency of Jacob Zuma was a total disaster'

Trevor Manuel has described the presidency of Jacob Zuma as a total disaster that left a legacy of bankruptcy.

Manuel said this during the Archbishop Thabo Makgoba Public Lecture at the University of the Western Cape on Wednesday.

Eusebius Mckaiser played clips from Manuel's speech.

Presidency of Jacob Zuma was a total disaster.

Trevor Manuel

Manuel acknowledges he served in Zuma's Cabinet until late 2014 charged with the responsibility of drafting the National Development Plan. he adds that Zuma did not interfere with the drafting of the plan.

You were in government, it's so much easier to have a backbone when you are not in government anymore. It is harder and more useful to democracy to speak out while you still have real power as a big player inside the ANC and inside the state.

Eusebius McKaiser, show host

Most of the callers on the show agreed with McKaiser saying Manuel could have spoken out earlier.

These people will tell us they have signed a confidentiality clause, they can't just talk in public, they have platforms in the ANC where we elevate our grievances ...that is nonsense.

Aubrey, caller

As far as I am concerned; Trevor Manuel is a coward. Why did he not speak at the time? Why now?

Peter, caller

However, some callers said Manuel might have spoken out within the party structures.

There are channels within the party I'm sure that Manuel also exhausted. It's not as easy as said. I think it's an unfair argument that he is speaking out now.

Bongiwe, caller

Listen to the clip of Trevor Manuel and find out what Eusebius and other callers had to say...
