READ: Zwelihle community demand better housing and service delivery

People who live in a place like Zwelihle township in Harmanus are fed up with the backyard conditions and have been demanding land on which they can erect their homes. But up until now, authorities said that land has not been available.

The owners of Schulphoek in Hermanus have agreed to sell land, that was once destined for a luxury development, back to the government for homes for Zwelihle residents.

Western Cape Human Settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela said they have agreed to enter into a process to buy that land.

That emanated from the meeting that I had with the municipality and the backyard dwellers of Zwelihle. Because we agreed to engage on a regular basis and have a structured process and part of that process was to make sure we make that land available.

Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape Human Settlements MEC

By engaging the land owners with the view to sell that land back to us.

Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape Human Settlements MEC

He said the process that is left now is for their valuaters to value the land so that they can pay the market related price.
