Last year The John Maytham Show received a frantic call from the father of 10-year-old Gabriel, who is non-verbal and autistic, and had last been seen leaving his school, Snap Autistic Acadamy, in Raapkraal road, Kirstenhof, at 16.10.

Gabriel's father George had arrived to fetch his son, only to be told the child had left the premises.

With the speedy assistance of CapeTalk listeners the young boy was soon found.

Soon after John Maytham and the father of 10-year-old Gabriel pleaded with the public to help find the autistic child, Michael from lakeside called in to say they had found him.

An emotional John Maytham applauded the community spirit that had helped find the boy so quickly.

George now tells John that it is still an uphill battle of the autism journey.

From the event itself, nothing. Life carried on...slow and unsupported as it is in this country.

The school has been wonderful in what it can do, but from outside and especially from government - if I say the words I've given up trying I would sound defeatist - but I have so much on my plate.

There is no group that hosts events and helps parents and schools raise money for special teachers, he says.

Without the proper training, he cannot function and that is the reality of most kids on the autistic spectrum, and something I could not get through to the WCED.
