President Cyril Ramaphosa was speaking at the African Renaissance Conference in Kwazulu-Natal.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says the spate of political killings in Kwazulu-Natal threaten to tarnish Nelson Mandela's vision for unity.

Ramaphosa was speaking at African Renaissance Conference in Kwazulu-Natal.

The statement follow the arrest of Endumeni Mayor Siboniso Mbatha alongside another councillor and alleged hitman.

The three have been accused of plotting to assassinate the municipality’s speaker Bongiwe Mbatha Makathini.

Eyewitness News reporter Ziyanda Ngcobo has more on the story.

They face charges of conspiracy to commit murder. They are accused of wanting to kill the Speaker, this is in relation to her speaking out about the mayor's alleged corruption, also his undue influence in a security tender.

The President has said that the killings threaten to tarnish the vision of unity that Nelson Mandela had but also speaking about how these killings need to come to an end and that unity is the most important thing that needs to be fostered at this stage.
