IEC ready for 2019 national election but no date yet set

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) says it is happy with the progress made with regards to completing addresses as ordered by the Constitutional Court for the voters' roll.

The Midday Report host Ray White spoke to IEC CEO Sy Mamabolo with regards to the state of readiness of the IEC.

In 2016 we had 8.6 million complete addresses and to date we have over 18 million complete addresses.

Sy Mamabolo, IEC CEO

He says the IEC still had to register 2.2 million voters who are on the voters' roll but had no recorded home addresses.

We would've loved to fully comply with the orders of the Constitutional Court so we feel we need more time to deal with residual numbers of persons for whom we don't have home addresses.

Sy Mamabolo, IEC CEO

According to Mamabolo, the next elections can be expected between May and August of 2019 as the present term of the National Assembly and the Provincial Legislature comes to an end on 6 May, 2019.

The President has a three-month latitude to call for elections.
