Dr Mzukisi Grootboom says national leadership must take responsibility for the failing health care system.

The Gauteng Department of Health is in crisis.

That's according to Chairperson of the South African Medical Association, Dr Mzukisi Grootboom.

He says the province could be headed for a financial meltdown similar to what happened in the North West province.

Speaking to Bongani Bingwa, Dr Grootboom says systems need to be put in place to resolve the problems in the health sector.

Our concern is that this is a perennial problem. On a daily basis, we are having a report of problems that face our members across most of the provinces.

Dr Mzukisi Grootboom, Chairperson of the South African Medical Association

As far back as 2016, we have warned about the creeping instability of management of our hospitals. And unfortunately, South Africa has had the death of leadership across the board.

Dr Mzukisi Grootboom, Chairperson of the South African Medical Association

Dr Grootboom condemned the strike action at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Johannesburg.

Hundreds of workers went on the rampage over unpaid bonuses last week.
