Gauteng province recorded 175 complaints of physical assault of learners by teachers last year.

Sexual abuse complaints recorded were 43.

Gauteng MEC for education Panyaza Lesufi says the situation is unbearable and action is needed.

Where there is a need for us as a department to protect either educators or learners we will do so without favour.

Lesufi says last year alone the department dismissed 44 educators.

He says that there is an urgent need to establish a rehabilitation school instead of moving suspended learners around.

Lesufi further says the violence in schools has reached a crisis point.
