Whose name will replace Cape Town International Airport? EFF wants Mam' Winnie. Icosa says it's time Krotoa was given some credit.

There's been a great deal of public debate over what Cape Town International Airport should be renamed to.

LISTEN: 'You can't bear the thought that our airport be named after a black person'

On Monday, a public meeting held at the airport descended into chaos as different groups tried to motivate their oral submissions.

The Independent Civic Organisation of SA (Icosa) has proposed that the airport be renamed to Krotoa - the woman who was Khoi translator to Dutch colonisers.

Icosa's provincial leader Dawid Kamfer says Krotoa was the mother of our nation and he adds that she deserves representation and recognition.

The airport name must change, and it must change to Krotoa, the lady who was a slave on Robben Island.

Dawid Kamfer, Provincial Chair of the Independent Civic Organisation of SA

We are sick and tired of the Mandelas, the Ramaphosas, the Zumas and everything named after these guys.

Dawid Kamfer, Provincial Chair of the Independent Civic Organisation of SA

It's time for change. We want change. The only name we want is Krotoa, she was the mother of our nation.

Krotoa was not a political figure... We can no longer allow the big names in the ANC to grab all the titles in South Africa.

Meanwhile, the EFF wants to see the airport named after late struggle icon Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.

The EFF's Bernard Joseph says naming the airport after well-known Madikizela-Mandela will result in economic transformation in the Western Cape.

We believe this is the person that can bring about change in the Western Cape.

Bernard Joseph, Provincial Chairperson of EFF in the Western Cape

It's quite clear that she [Madikizela-Mandela] is the mother of the nation. She was a revolutionary.

If we name the Cape Town International Airport after Mama Winnie, it will also bring about economic transformation in the Western Cape.

Several callers joined the conversation and justified their proposed names on The Eusebius McKaiser Show.

The public participation process to rename the airport is open until midnight on Wednesday 6 June.

Take a listen to the lively debate:
