A special meeting of the Knysna Council was held on Wednesday where opposition members and Democratic Alliance councilors argued over a motion of no confidence in Mayor Eleanore Bouw Spies.
Speaking to CapeTalk's Kieno Kammies, Western Cape leader of the Democratic Alliance, Bonginkosi Madikizela confirmed that Eleanore Bouw Spies was unseated as mayor after being was voted out.
The only way to explain what happened to Eleanore yesterday is that it was a coup d'etat. We have majority in that municipality but for some reason, some of our DA Councillors just decided, without informing the party, that they are going to vote with the opposition - without letting us know what the issues are.— Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape Human Settlements MEC
Madikizela says the Spies has been replaced by Mark Willemse, speaker of Eden District.
He colluded with members of the opposition and convinced them to vote for him, that is totally unacceptable.— Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape Human Settlements MEC
Party officials will be going to Knysna on Friday to establish what really happened, says Madikizela.
He says the DA doesn't recognise a Mayor that didn't get the mandate of the party, meaning Willemse might be asked to step down.
