First solar desalination plant to be built in the Western Cape

Although there's been some significant rainfall in the Western Cape, the drought-stricken province is still declared a national disaster.

Residents are constantly advised to use water sparingly.

Turn Key Water Solutions, a local arm of a French company has developed technology which will see the opening of South Africa's first solar desalination plant by October this year.

Founder, Patrice Boyer and his business partner Neil Coombs speaks to Capetalk's Kieno Kammies about how this new technology works.

The technology has two key features, it is energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

Patrice Boyer, Founder

Our technology is scalable and we are able to decentralise our offering.

Neil Coombs, Business partner

We are looking at coastal developments of smaller communities where quality of water and supply of water is always a challenge.

Neil Coombs, Business partner

We believe once water security is in place and guaranteed, the knock-on effect for construction or garden services will be provided in that space.

Neil Coombs, Business partner

The plant will be constructed in Witsand, a municipality where several coastal villages are suffering from a structural water deficit. It is located 250km east of Cape Town.
