Senior lecturer at Stellenbosch University, Thinus Booysen gives an update of the Shoprite, Bridgiot, Pragma and University of Stellenbosch initiative to launch the Smart Water Meter challenge in Western Cape Schools.
The device is installed in schools to detect water leaks and has saved millions of litres of water so far.
So far a total of 271 schools have dropulas installed.
We have saved just under six-and-a-half million rands of water and we've saved just under 80 million litres of water in the 271 schools.— Thinus Booysen, Senior lecturer at Stellenbosch University
He says, unfortunately, as the rainy season arrives and threats of Day Zero appear to have receded, schools have slightly increased consumption over the past few weeks so they are raising awareness around this.
But still, in May we saved 20 million litres of water.— Thinus Booysen, Senior lecturer at Stellenbosch University
He says a competition is in the works to incentivise schools to save. And the winner will receive a prize and exposure.
