Gauteng commuters brace for another day without buses as strike continues

Gauteng commuters are urged to find alternative transport as the Metro Bus strike continues to its third day.

Workers affiliated to Democratic Municipal and Allied Workers Union of South Africa (Demawusa) embarked on a strike over a number of issues including salary increases.

Joburg regional spokesperson for Demawusa, Dion Makhura says amongst their demands, they are requesting a difference in salaries based on an individual's experience in a position.

He says junior workers should not be earning the same salary as seniors who have been on the job for a number of years.

We are saying every three years you have to progress to show that you are more experienced than others.

Makhura says workers who are newly recruited into Metro Bus are being exploited by being paid less than the company's salary structure.

They are demanding that the company stick to the salary structure for new recruits.

It is our responsibility as the union to tell the employers to stop exploiting the people.

Talks to end the strike have hit a dead end but Makhura says they are willing to resolve issues.

He says out of fifteen demands they have dropped six in order to meet the employer half way but still, the employer is not willing to come to the party.

We were supposed to meet at 8 am and I am still here waiting. They have called in their sweetheart union and I don't know what they are discussing in there - so there is no willingness from the employer.
