'Having regular licensing enforcement will ensure less guns are circulated'

The Constitutional Court (ConCourt) has set aside an application to change the Firearms Control Act.

Last year, the High Court found the sections related to firearm license renewal unconstitutional; if a person failed to reapply more than 90 days from the date of expiry, they would be deemed to be in unlawful possession of a firearm.

Gun Free South Africa has welcomed this ruling saying it upholds the constitutionality of regular gun licence renewals.

Communications Manager at Gun Free SA, Sara Chitambo says the law can now be properly enforced.

For the past two years since it was challenged, it has not been enforced properly so that we ensure that guns are not used in criminal activities. So or us the fact that the police now have a law that they can use to hold gun-owners accountable, this is a win.

Sara Chitambo, Communications Manager at Gun Free South Africa

When crimes are committed we know who to hold accountable and of course this will also ensure that there are less guns in circulation and when there are less guns in circulation we have less gun deaths.
