Naked Scientist: Here is why birds don't get electrocuted on a power line

Ever wondered why birds do not get electrocuted when sitting on a power line?

Naked Scientist Chris Smith explains why.

When a bird sits on a power line, it is not connected to energy at two different potentials. The reason electricity flows from a power line through your house , through your gadgets, is because the gadget you have connected to the power line is offering the electricity a path from a high potential (the power line) to a low potential (earth).

Chris Smith, Naked Scientist

If a bird is just sitting on a power line, the bird is not offering the electricity a path to anywhere.
