'Police station robberies are caused by negligence'

Parliamentary Police Committee chairperson Dr Francois Beukman says police stations become a target for criminals because of negligence. He says station commanders have a duty to evaluate and put proper measures in place to respond to break-in incidents.

This comes after a robbery at Eden Park police station on Thursday where criminals stole one R-5 rifle and two empty magazines.

We believe that the National Police Commissioner has to account in Parliament because we have spoken to the police management about this matter a couple of times and they have indicated that they will implement measures but this latest incident shows that there is still a gap.

Dr Beukman says improving the police intelligence, physical security, and working cctv cameras are some of the measures that needs to be prioritised in police stations.

We had various interactions with the police management, where we called on them to make this a priority in terms of dealing with the issue. In the latest incident, an R-5 rifle was stolen and that means it is now in the hands of criminals who will use it for criminal activities.
