#SADGT: Red wine portraits changing the face of alcoholism

In this segment of South African’s Doing Great Things, we chat to musician and red wine painter Thabiso Thabethe about what influenced him to change his medium from paint to red wine.

Thabethe says that he uses red wine to paint portraits of alcoholics in his community. He adds that music is also used to covey awareness about alcoholism in the community.

When I started with the medium, I was using traditional ways to paint until I realised that alcoholism is rampant in my community, and nobody was talking about it.

It affected me personally because my father is an alcoholic.

I tried to address this issue by working on red wine portraits of alcoholics that are close to me, and people that I know on a personal level.
