Spokesperson for Sibanye-Stillwater mine, Thabisile Phumo has confirmed that the four bodies of the five miners who have been trapped at its Kloof Ikamva shaft near Westonaria have been recovered. The fifth one has yet to be found.
It is understood that five miners entered an abandoned section of the mine, with poor ventilation and died as a result of exposure to high temperatures.
As a company we are really distressed by this situation and we would like to send our condolences to the families.— Thabisile Phumo, Spokesperson for Sibanye-Stillwater mine
It is still not clear why these five miners entered the abandoned section of the mine and what they intended to do there.
According to Phumo, this was a section the mine is no longer operating where gold was previously mined.
She says they are currently waiting for investigation report to determine why that section was opened and what these miners were doing there.
The investigation will help us establish why did they go into that section and we will be able to get to the bottom of how such a tragic accident would happen.— Thabisile Phumo, Spokesperson for Sibanye-Stillwater mine
