[LISTEN] Tshwane baby haven sees increase in unwanted toddlers

While there is no data to support the large number of abandoned babies in Gauteng , Tahiyya Hassim, Founder and Director of New Beginnings says there appears to be an increase in the number of unwanted toddlers in Tshwane.

New Beginnings, a safe haven for abandoned babies, is based in Laudium.

The establishment is one of many centres around the province.

Joanne Joseph spoke to Hassim to find out more.

We do have in other areas where there aren't baby walls, a high incident of babies freezing to death, so we encourage them to rather use the baby walls.

Tahiyya Hassim, Founder and Director of New Beginnings

This year has been a little bit quieter than usual, we have seen a decrease in abandoned babies this year, however we have seen an increase in unwanted toddlers.

A lot of these mothers that we are speaking to have indicated that they have tried to give up their babies when they were born and were dissuaded to do so and thus kept their babies and now two to three years later, can't afford to keep them and are now only opting for adoption.
