'After investigations we will know who authorised miners to the abandoned shaft'

Sibanye Stillwater spokesperson says at this stage it is very difficult to speculate who led the miners into the abandoned shaft.

This comes after trade unions said the shift boss is the blame for the incident that led to the death of four miners and one unaccounted for.

We want to clarify, we said yesterday that they went into an abandoned area. So typically there is a protocol that you use to go into such areas because you find the challenges with abandoned areas is that you find that they are not ventilated.

Thabisile Phumo, Sibanye Stillwater spokesperson

The Department of Mineral Resources is on site and they will be the ones conducting the investigations. At the back of their investigations, we will be able to establish the fact to who in the value chain may have authorised or not authorised the crew to go underground.

Meanwhile, the search for the fifth miner at Sibanye-Stillwater's Kikamva shaft is still continuing. Phumo says they got feedback from one of the crews of how many miners went underground.

We know that that miner is not accounted for because of our system and because of the information we've been getting from the people who were working not far from them.
