Mkhwebane apologises for 'no-show' at Justice Portfolio Committee

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has apologised to MPs for failing to appear before Parliament's Justice Portfolio Committee last week.

Mkhwebane was due to brief members on the appointment of a special advisor in her office and to discuss calls for an inquiry into her fitness to hold office. However she excused herself the day before, citing a family emergency.

Committee members told Mkhwebane in a sitting on Wednesday, that they felt "disrespected" by the last minute call for a postponement.

Eyewitness News parliamentary reporter Babalo Ndenze has been following story.

Committee members were unanimous, all of them using the word disrespected, they felt disrespected by her snub last week. Especially the fact that she sent written correspondence at 5pm the afternoon before, when she was supposed to appear the next morning.

Meanwhile the Democratic Alliance says it has prima facie evidence to warrant an inquiry into Mkhwebane's fitness to hold office.

Ndenze explains.

John Steenhuisen, the DA's chief whip quoted from the North Gauteng High Court judgement that said Mkhwebane overreached in her powers when she called for a constitutional amendment to change the reserve bannk's mandate.
