The police and the Hawks are prioritising the mosque attack in Malmesbury that left three people dead.

The man believed to have carried out the deadly mosque attack in Malmesbury in the Western Cape had prayed with worshippers before the fatal assault.

Two people were stabbed to death and two others were wounded during the attack on Thursday morning.

The attacker was later shot and killed by police during a stand-off.

EWN's Shamiela Fisher has been following the story:

The attacker claimed to be traveling through Malmesbury to Vredenburg and was given shelter at the place of worship.

We're told by relatives that the attacker is not from the area. He came here last night looking for shelter, claiming that he was on his way to Vredenburg and that he was looking for a place to stay overnight.

In the early hours of the morning he took out a knife and firstly attacked the Imam. Several people came to the Imam's defense. Two worshipers were killed in the process.
