Woolworths recently promised to stop using non-recyclable plastic packaging for its own products as well as plastic shopping bags, straws and earbuds by 2022.

By 2022?!

Not good.

Which brings us to Paul Rubin’s Nude Foods, Cape Town’s first plastic free grocery store.

The concept is not new, or a hipster fad.

Our great-grandparents shopped happily before goods packaged in plastic existed.

Nude Foods stores and packages everything in reusable containers such as cotton bags and glass jars.

Shoppers bring their own containers, bags or whatever they want to pack their groceries in.

Nothing goes to a landfill.

Rubin says his prices are lower than the packaged equivalents at major supermarkets.

Shoppers can choose the exact weight of the items they want, potentially a major cost saver.

The Money Show’s Bruce Whitfield interviewed Rubin for his weekly “ShapeShifter” feature.
